Skin 101 - Dryness, Dehydration, and Flakiness
Dry skin is defined as skin that has a tight feeling. If you have dry skin you might also have have a flaking, rough texture, and maybe even some dullness - but oily skin can have this too. This flaking, roughness, and dullness are signs of dehydration. Dryness and dehydration often go hand and hand, but someone can experience one without the other.
How does someone with dry skin moisturize?
Dehydrated Flakes is a tricky one because dry skin is not necessarily dehydrated, so moisturizing won’t necessarily fix the problem.
The What, Why, and How of Dryness
As we stated above dryness is the tight feeling you skin has all day if you don't wear a moisturizer.
Dryness also is a clear sign that there is not enough oil in your skin. Did you know that if you have dry skin, you probably have oily skin too? This is because the skin produces more oil when it's dry.
The skin can get dry because it lacks moisture or because it is actually dehydrated. To understand which way it is you will have to know the difference between moisturizing and hydrating.
Dry skin has a lack of an oil and water balance. Dryness is a problem that concerns a lack of oil production. In other words, you skin isn' t producing enough oil to keep your skin comfortable. Keywords for dry skin are: tightness, discomfort, pulling. We will discuss the water part in the next section
Dry skin can be caused by a number of things. The most common are: Using too much soap or detergent. This can strip away the natural oils in the skin. Cuts, scratches, and abrasions.
To treat dry skin, you need to:
1. Use gently daily cleansing that will not strip your skin's moisture.
2. Use extremely gentle exfoliation - to allow any treatments to absorb better since you are removing any dead skin.
3. Balance the oil and water levels of your skin.
The What, Why, and How of Dehydration (Flaking)
As we stated above dehydration is the flakiness, roughness, or dullness that might appear in skin. Dehydration is the water component of the "balance of oil and water". Dehydration characterized as the break in your skin's moisture barrier (the layer of lipids that seals moisture in). When there is a break in the skin's moisture barrier, it allows and water to escape, causing the dehydration. Keywords for dehydration are: flakiness, roughness, dullness, parchment lining.
To treat dehydrated skin, you need to:
1. Use daily cleansing according to your skin's needs (dry, combo, oily).
2. Use exfoliation - to allow any treatments to absorb better since you are removing any dead skin (flakes).
3. Rebuild your moisture barrier.
Oily skin with Dehydration
Dryness = oil production and Dehydration = water production
Now it should be obvious how someone with oily skin can experience "dryness" because it is actually dehydration. Oily skin is comfortable, and any flakiness, roughness, and/or dullness is dehydration.
