Know How to Dehydrate Bananas Slices
Bananas are tropical fruits that are not only very healthy but also very delicious. One downside to the fruit, however, is that it has a very short life span. It can easily start rotting even after a number of days. If you want to have some bananas ready in your home for consumption, then aside from getting fresh ripe bananas, you can also consider preserving the fruit so you can enjoy it any time you please. This can be done by dehydrating bananas.
Dehydrating bananas can also be very advantageous especially if you want to have the fruit whole year round even if it is not in season. Dehydrating bananas is basically the process of getting rid of the water in the fruit. One notable thing about dehydrated bananas is that the dried ones are sweet and delicious. These dehydrated bananas can retain nutrients and usually come in the form of small chips. Banana chips are great to have in the house so you and your family can have healthy snacks.
Here are simple instructions to follow so you can make your own banana chips by dehydrating banana slices.
You would need to first prepare the ingredients - bananas and lemon juice. The amount of lemon juice you will be using should be directly proportional to the amount of banana slices. Keep in mind, though, that the lemon juice you must prepare should be enough cover all the banana slices needed to be dehydrated. The basic tools you will be needing for the whole process include a bowl, a mesh, a sheet, a knife, a chopping board, a baking sheet and dehydrator or oven.
Here are the easy to follow step in making banana chips.
The first is in to see that your oven is pre-heated to 125F. If you have a dehydrator, you can skip setting the oven temperature.
The second step is to remove the skin of the bananas. After doing so, slice the bananas into bite sized pieces; remember to cut in it in equal sizes.
The third step will be to put the sliced bananas in lemon juice. Make sure they are soaked for around 5 minutes - not longer because heating them too long will turn the fruit slices brown. After 5 minutes, get the slices out of the lemon juice dip. If you do not have access to lemon juice, you can always use unsweetened pineapple juice for this process.
The fourth step to making banana chips is to get rid the excess lemon juice that have been absorbed by the bananas slices. This is done by the laying down the fruit slices on a mesh sheet so excess lemon juice can be dropped and drained.
The fifth step is to arrange the banana slices on the baking sheet; making sure that no slice is in contact with another slice. Now that you have laid them out perfectly on the baking sheet, you can then put them on the oven at the preset temperature and leave them for around 18 hours.
You will know if your bananas chips or dried banana slices are ready if they are already pliable. After some time, they will turn crunchy. If you are using a dehydrator, you can use medium heat to dehydrate the banana slices for 12 to 24 hours. After the set time is over, you can turn the oven or the dehydrator off and let the banana slices cool off.
